Your family's dining table is an important part of your household. It's where you gather with family and friends to break bread and create some genuine bonding time with those closest to you. If you are thinking about heading to a dining table store to upgrade or replace your current table, this is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Here's how you can ensure you walk out with a quality table that your family will enjoy using for years.

This is Not the Time to Get Cheap

If you are the penny-pinching type, that's fine, but you should know that when it comes to dining tables, you really do get what you pay for. You want your dining table to be sturdy enough to hold up to the wear and tear that it will likely face as the centerpiece of your family's dining experience for the next five or 10 years. Your best bet is likely to stick with a classic hardwood. Oak, maple, walnut, and mahogany are all good options. Hardwoods typically are made of better stuff than composites and will hopefully last for a longer period of time.

With that said, there are also premium materials available outside of wood if you are so inclined. Just know that glass, marble, or other material types might not be quite as sturdy. This is just something to keep in mind if you have young children in the home. You don't want your glass table to get cracked when someone throws a toy or a temper tantrum, for example.

Be Aware of the Size

If you already having a dining room table that is a good fit for the room, you can obviously just stick with one that is the same approximate size. But think for a bit about how people maneuver around the table while they are in the dining room. Do people have to constantly say "excuse me" to squeeze by other people when trying to get to their seat? This could be a sign that your current table is too big and is cramping your dining room. This might also be the time to switch things up to a circular-style table or some other option besides the traditional rectangle.

Don't Forget to Protect the Table with the Right Cloth

Most dining room table stores will also sell tablecloths, runners, seat cushions, and everything else you need for a complete dining experience. Don't leave the furniture store without getting something to protect your table's material from scratches.
