If you are moving into a new home and your old dining room table will not work in your new space, you will need to go shopping for a new dining room table. To get the right dining room table, you need to approach the process correctly.

1. Know the Size of Your Space

First, you will not want to wing it when knowing how much space you have to work with. Instead, get out your measuring tape and figure out the exact dimensions of the space. This will allow you to understand better how much workable space you have for a dining room table.

You are going to want to subtract around 2 to 4 feet from your measurement. This will give you an idea of what size table will work in your space. For example, if you have a room that is 8' x 10', you will want a table that is around 6'x8' or 4'x6'. These configurations will allow you to place a dining room table to allow for room to move around in your dining room and not feel cramped.

2. Consider Shape

Second, consider the shape of the table and how it will interact with space. If you have a square room, a square or even a circular table will work well in the space. If you have a rectangular room, go with an oval or rectangular shape table. These shapes tend to work together; you need the shape of the table to work with the room's shape and allow people to flow around the table without creating an awkward feeling.

3. Create a Mock-Up

Third, once you find a few tables that you like, create a physical mock-up of the table before you make a purchase. Measure out the table and mark the measurements on the floor. Then, if you have any dining tables that you can use, place them on the measurements, and ensure you have room to pull a chair in and out. This is a really easy way to see if the shape and size of the table you are looking at would work in your space.

If you moved into a new space and need a new dining room table, measure the space, and then subtract two to four feet to get an idea of what size of the table would work in the space. Next, consider how the shape of the room will work with the shape of the table. Finally, when you find a table you like, mark it out with tape on the floor, and play with chairs to ensure it works right with space before going forward with your space.
