Since home offices don't require a lot of furniture to be functional, it may be tempting to rush off the furniture store to purchase a desk and chair without putting much thought into what you're buying. However, a well-designed office will serve you well for years to come. Doing a little homework will help you find the best furniture for your home office space.

1. Consider your space

The size of your office space should determine the size of the furniture. While it may be possible to cram a large desk into a small room, it will lead to the room appearing cluttered. A small desk in a large space will appear off-balanced in proportion to the rest of the room. Select furniture to accommodate the room measurements and allow you plenty of room to move about freely.

Consider any features in the room that will enhance the eye appeal of the room. For instance, placing your desk in front of a window will draw attention to the beauty of the outdoors and natural light. If your office is in a location with few or no windows, place an attractive desk and area rug in the center of the room to create a focal point.

2. Consider how your office will be used

How you plan to use your home office will be one of the biggest factors in determining how to furnish it. Will you be the only one using it or will it be shared by other family members? Will you be running a business from your home office or will it be strictly for personal use?

If your home office will mainly be used for paying bills or checking email, you will have more flexibility in the type of furniture you select. For instance, you can choose a desk chair that has aesthetic appeal but may not offer a lot of comfort if you sit in it for hours. You will likely be fine with a simple writing desk rather than a larger business style desk.

If you are the only one using the office, you will have freedom in designing your office to suit your personal preferences. If you need to accommodate other family members, you will want to set up multiple workstations to give everyone their work area.

Setting up a great home office will be easy if you keep in mind how the room will be used and who will be using it. Being mindful of the room size will help you choose home office furniture that fits well and will help you create an attractive workspace.
