When you new baby's due date is approaching, one of the things that you'll need to do is set up a nursery room in your home. This process involves not only decorating the space to help it feel cozy and inviting, but also buying several pieces of furniture. A crib is obviously atop your shopping list, but a visit to a local furniture store will show you a variety of other things that are useful to add. The following pieces of furniture are available in several different styles, so you'll have no trouble finding pieces that match or complement the crib and overall decor.

Dresser

A dresser is an essential piece of furniture for a child's nursery. There's a good chance that you'll be changing your child's clothing several times a day, and this means that they'll have a large selection of garments. A large dresser will provide enough storage for all of these items, and you can also use one of the drawers for diapers and other supplies. You generally want to pick a dresser that has a wide top, as it's common to use this surface as a changing table. All that you'll need is a changing pad for the top of the dresser — a product that you may be able to buy at the furniture store.

Rocking Chair

A rocking chair or glider is another important piece of furniture to buy for this room. Many new parents enjoy sitting in this style of chair as they hold their child, as the gentle movement may help the child to fall asleep in your arms. You'll be visiting your child in their nursery several times during the day, including a few times overnight for breastfeeding. Having a cozy chair that you can use in this space — rather than standing or using an uncomfortable folding chair — will make these visits more appealing.

Bookshelf

You'll also want to buy a bookshelf that you can set up in your child's nursery. The size of the room will partially dictate what style of bookshelf you buy, but one that is low and wide is often more suitable than one that is narrow and tall. The former style provides you with a good surface on which to set various decorations and functional items. A lamp, a stereo through which you can play lullabies, and other items can all work well on the bookshelf. Over time, you'll likely amass a collection of children's books that you can read to your child. With the bookshelf, these books will be handy to grab.

When designing your baby's room, visit a furniture store near you to pick out some functional and stylish pieces.
